A Word of Welcome (1997-2007)

collection of the artist

In the context of the research initiative 404 Object Not Found: What remains of Media Art? and the exhibition Thirty Years Dutch Video Art, the installation work 'A Word of Welcome,' by artist eddie d was selected as one of four  case studies used to examine the documentation and preservation of multimedia installations with the purpose of designing a model for installation registration and re-installation.

The work, 'A Word of Welcome', has  been presented in different forms over a number of years. With a view to preservation and future presentations, an interview with the artist was held and recorded on video. The intention was to explore the limits to, and possibilities of, change to this installation. The work consists of a monitor on a pedestal presenting the image of a news reporter. The monitor is connected to the doormat, when someone enters, the reporter on the screen welcomes the visitor. This installation can  be set-up in several versions with different types of welcomes in a number of different languages.
