Workshop Streaming Alliance

For the Next 5 Minutes festival an open source streaming workshop will be organised by the Netherlands Media Art Institute. During the workshop participants will learn how to use open source streaming tools and set up a streaming network for the festival.

Participants will make a plan on how to stream the festival. Knowledge of Linux and open source software for Linux is preferred but not required. Participants who don’t have this knowledge can be expected to learn in-depth installing and configuring of Linux and open source software.

Introduction:

The open source streaming alliance (OSSA) and dynabolic (dyne cdrom) have always been very active in the open source domain and streaming.

The open source streaming alliance works on providing a high quality, low budget method of streaming for cultural organisations and individuals working in the cultural field.

The dyne cdrom aims at creating a bootable Linux cdrom to turn any workstation into a streaming studio and introduce a larger audience to Linux and open source. This is done without having to install any software on the hard disk.

Recently the two are working together to also incorporate video streaming on the dyne cdrom.

The participants:

The workshop will provide the participants with extensive knowledge about the tools used by the OSSA. The participants will consist of two groups with different interests and skills.

The first group is content driven and interested in streaming. It will be their objective to learn about streaming and to organise the coverage of a part of the next 5 minutes festival. During the workshop they will learn how to use the tools, make a script for the display of the event, create a user interface and perform the actual coverage on location.

The second group is technically oriented and interested in streaming and building and maintaining streaming systems. It will be their objective to create and enhance the streaming tools as described. They will be setting up a worldwide relaying server network, test and use the dyne cdrom.

Both groups will be working together to achieve the end goal: the streaming event.

The tools:

The following four tools will be used in the workshop.
1. Mpeg4Ip
This is an open source implementation of MpegIV and Divx. It provides a number of tools to create streaming content on Windows, Apple and Linux as well as a live Divx streaming tool for Linux

2. Open Source Darwin Streaming Server (DSS)
The open source Darwin streaming server is an implementation of the QuickTime streaming server developed by Apple. The creators of Mpeg4ip have closely worked together with the people who have build the DSS. The Darwin server has also relaying capabilities. This gives the ability to distribute streams across a worldwide network. http://developer.apple.com/darwin/
3 Dyne cdrom
The dyne cd is packed with audio and video tools. These tools are pre configured to make them easily usable by end users. By booting a workstation with the cdrom, a workstation can be turned into a streaming studio. http://dynebolic.org
4 FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. It includes libavcodec, the leading audio/video codec library. FFmpeg is developed under Linux, but it can compiled under most OSes, including Windows. http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/
All packages are open source and under development and are used by a wide audience. They all make use of open source software and as a result of this, content can be created and distributed without any licensing problems or costs. Together they provide tools for a high quality streaming platform.

Using the frequencyclock to create a program for live streams
How to use the dynobolic cdrom
Demonstration: setting linux up as a multimedia station using the linux low latency kernel and the jack sound server
